Lush by Patty Young

February 9, 2012

It’s here! And just in time … winter can get dreary in these parts, and this lovely collection from Patty Young for Michael Miller most definitely brightened my day. Creamsicle, raspberry, pink and splashes of citron in this sunny palette are a sweet reminder of a far-off summer’s day.

I’ve been carefully considering my options for a sample quilt for a few days now, and have some ideas to share. The large scale prints make me think of a simple beach quilt, like this one from Denyse Schmidt Quilts. There’s also Six of One, A Half-Dozen of Another in Last-Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts by Joelle Hoversen which takes just two beautiful fabrics to make a lap/twin size quilt. These simple quilts make your quilting choices stand out … whether its simple straight line hand quilting or a more elaborate machine stitched pattern.

Other favorites of mine when working with large scale prints are the big block patterns in Terry Atkinson’s Happy Hour. I first made Triple Treat with a Valori Wells collection, and then later with an Amy Butler collection. Both were standouts for the lively riot of color and pattern they produced.

What about Cheaper By The Dozen? The relatively large rectangles (about 5″ x 8″) in this pattern will also show of those large scale prints.

Don’t be fooled by the dark quilts on the pattern cover, here’s what it might look like in a sunnier palette:

In the end, I will most likely use Simple Day At The Lake from Threaded Pear Studio as my sample quilt. I can’t resist the sweet simplicity of a square in square block, and a scrappy border that ties in all the prints from the quilt top.

In typical Mad About Patchwork fashion, all of these options will sew up quickly – perfect for those just learning to quilt, or more experienced quilters who are looking for a quick project.

For those dreaming of summer, and a day at the beach, I have a little gift for orders over $25. Use the coupon code DAPHNE at checkout, and I will send Valori Well’s Daphne Throw pattern with your order (while supplies last.)

Happy stitching!
