Tumble Time

February 8, 2011

These two little cuties are tumbler quilts that I finished last week. The tumblers are a die-cut shape that sew together quickly in rows to make a quilt as small or as big as you’d like. I had these machine quilted by Joan Read, and then added the binding. At the top is Hooty Hoot, with edges left wavy (the binding is straight cut, and the curve is gentle enough that the binding stretches easily around the curves). At the bottom is Fun Flowers, with edges trimmed straight before binding.

TIP: If symmetry is important to you, you will want to use an odd number of tumblers across and an even number of rows in your quilt. I did not do this, and you can see the resulting asymmetry in the wavy edges of the Hooty Hoot quilt.

Here’s a quick guide to how many tumblers you need to make a quilt:

54 tumblers (9 across x 6 down) finishes about 36″ x 36″

72 tumblers (9 across x 8 down) finishes about 36″ x 48″

110 tumblers (11 across x 10 down) finishes about 44″ x 60″

210 tumblers (15 across x 14 down) finishes about 60″ x 84″

Here are the bound edges, and a peek at the cuddly fleece backings I used (fuschia on the left, ivory on the right). You could easily put one of these together in just a few hours, and have a terrific gift for a new mom!

Love these. I just bought a tumbler template from The Missouri Quilt Co. After seeing yours, I can’t wait to try it. Beautiful! Please consider stopping by my blog and becoming a follower…I’m a newbie and would really appreciate the support. Thanks!
