Selvedge Edge Needlebook

Here are the instructions for the last project in the 2010 Christmas challenge. The instructions originally came from Craft Blog, but are not currently available over there.

Start with a 4.5″ x 8.5″ rectangle of muslin or some other neutral fabric for the foundation. You will also need 8-10 selvedge strips at least 9″ long.

Stitch the first selvedge along the length of the foundation piece.

Overlap the raw edge of the first selvedge strip with the next selvedge and stitch along the length.

Continue adding selvedge strips until the foundation is covered.

Trim the edges of the strips even with the foundation piece.

Baste a 3″ ribbon loop to the left edge of your needlebook.

Sew a 4.5″ x 8.5″ piece of felt or wool to the right side of your needlebook with a 1/4″ seam , leaving a 3″ opening on one edge for turning. Trim the corners to reduce the bulk.

Turn right side out and top-stitch close to the edge all the way around, closing the opening that you left for turning. Top-stitch a straight line down the middle of the needlebook (like the spine of a book).

Attach a button to the front, and you’re all done!
