Pow Wow

August 13, 2012

On vacation with my family at Red Pine Camp last week … you can see by our attire that the weather was a bit cool and damp. It’s still the greatest place on earth (IMHO) and we wouldn’t miss our week for anything. Alex is spending the whole summer there as junior staff, and it was great to see him working hard and still having the time of his life!

Another flimsy from my scraps of Kona … this time in a Red Pine Camp palette of browns and reds with a pop of chartreuse (my go-to green.) I picked bone – a warm neutral – as the background. I love the way the solids give such a bold and graphic interpretation of the pattern.

Alison’s detailed pattern booklet has instructions for four sizes (baby, crib, throw and twin), and also includes a scrap saving tip for making smaller HST (half square triangles) as you go.

And now I’ve got a little giveaway … 80 half square triangles all neatly trimmed (2.75″) and pressed and ready to use. I also have 4 scraps of the Valori Wells Sole print that was the color inspiration for this project. I have more than enough projects to keep me busy for the next year, so will happily pass these on to one of you.

For a chance to win, just leave a comment telling me about your family’s favourite summer vacation destination. I’ll draw a number at random on August 20th, and post the winner back here.

This year, we spent a week in the mountains of northern New Mexico. It was simply beautiful; lots of time to enjoy the scenary and the fresh mountain air. Love your quilt top!!

We like to rent a cottage on a lake within a two hour drive of Ottawa. We’re not picky – all of the lakes in that area are beautiful!

Ooo – those would come in handy!! Our favourite summer vacation spots when we were kids were Bon Echo or Sandbanks. So many great memories camping. Wearing pots as rain hats, setting up the clothesline and being in charge of hanging the dish towels, catching fireflies, hotdogs on sticks cooked over the fire – ahh to be a kid again!

With my kids being young they love to go to Toronto spending a few days there and either go to the Zoo, Museum or Science Centre. Even the subway ride is fun for them. Just watching their faces as they see everything makes it the best.

We never really had any specific destinations as we lived all over the place, but I went to Camp Edphy twice (a French sports camp in the Laurentians) and loved it!

I’d love these little hst’s to play with! Our family vacation destination of choice is the Rockies … Banff … Jasper … that whole area. We tented and hiked in summer and skiied in the winter and just enjoyed all there was to see and do. My 2 kids are both in their 20’s now. Someday I hope we can all go to the mountains for Christmas together.

Favorite summer spot is Green Lake, BC, youngest sister and her hubby live there. Every year during the 3rd week of July they and several of their friends invite as many as possible family members head there for “Christmas in July”.
In our family: My 85yr young father, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren turn their property into a campground for 20+ people.
On the Saturday, we hold a potluck dinner with all the families and call it “Christmas in July” the gathering is at least 100+ and everyone catches up with friends and family.

My husband and I vacationed 7 years in a row when our son was growing up. It IS the BEST place to vacation. What can be better than going to summer camp with your child? We loved every summer.
