Summer Sew Along Week 2

August 31, 2011

This week we’re making a table runner, with a twist on a simple 9 patch block. The tutorial for this Tricky Tablerunner comes from Laura who blogs at Spool Sewing. Very easy to make, I chose to make 3 blocks (Laura’s version has 4) for a finished size of 14″ x 35″. I picked 3 fabrics from my bundle, and used some of the coordinating solid for the backing. Pay attention to the placing of your fabrics in the 9 patch – I put my text print in the corners (which do not get cut) so that the words would be readable. I used a scrap of regular cotton batting in the middle.  If you have fun making this block for the runner, it also works well in a quilt.

We’ll be tackling a new project next week. If you’re following along, please add your photos to the flickr pool. I’d love to see how your projects are turning out.

Last week I discussed pre-washing fabric, but forgot to mention that I never pre-wash pre-cuts (charms, strips, tumblers). I think that after shrinking they wouldn’t work in most patterns that call for pre-cuts. I also thought I’d illustrate the before and after effects of washing and drying on a table runner. The one on the right has never been washed, the one on the left was made without pre-washing, and machine washed and dried after finishing. Although it has a “crinkly” or textured look, it still lays perfectly flat on the table.
