Summer Reading Part 3

July 28, 2011

I chose Quilts Made Modern by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr (2011) for this week’s summer reading suggestion for a couple of reasons. First, I’ve been a huge fan of this dynamic du0 (FunQuilts studio) for a number of years. Second, the cover quilt (Beach Glass) has me enthralled. The color choice, the deceptively simple piecing and the white sashing are all just … perfect! You know when you look at a quilt from these two that a lot of thought has gone into not only the design, but the piecing and quilting as well.

Here’s part of what the author’s have to say about the book:

160 pages of quilting A to Z. There are 10 never-before-seen patterns using a wide variety of techniques. In addition to pieced quilts, we show you how to tackle hand applique as well as machine applique. There are designs for solids as well as those for large-scale prints. We still design with some tone-on-tones in mind as we did in Modern Quilt Workshop but there are also hand dyes and wovens in the book. Weeks spent eight months hand-quilting one of the quilts because we wanted to show you a modern twist on quilting by hand. There’s even a modern take on reproduction feedsack prints.

This week just happens to coincide with the blog tour for the book, and I encourage you to visit some (or all) of the stops on the tour to find out more (and win some prizes). You can find the itinerary at Craft Nectar, which is where Weeks blogs.

Two other books in my library by Bill and Weeks are Quiltmaker’s Color Workshop (2002) and The Modern Quilt Workshop (2005 ) which features the Plain Spoken quilt, among others. Definitely worth checking out if you can get your hands on a copy.

This bundle of Kona solids is my interpretation of the colors in the Beach Glass quilt on the cover. Use it any way you like, or try a Sliced Fruit version available as a kit in the shop. Save 10% on the bundles and the kits until August 5.

All books are 10% off in July and August. And a reminder that this is the last week to save 25% on Innocent Crush by Anna Marie Horner … sale ends August 1.

And if you’re following from Canada, enjoy the long weekend!
