A Modern Rose Garden

July 12, 2010

Sanibel in the shade

Last week’s heat wave gave me plenty of opportunity to stay inside and sew in air-conditioned comfort. I couldn’t resist the beautiful colors of Sanibel, and decided Modern Rose Garden from Carolina Patchworks would be a great way to show off the colors and prints. The result is a beautiful, modern, summer-y quilt, which makes a lovely picnic blanket. As I was taking the photo, I was struck by the thought that it would make a terrific wedding present. Make the quilt and some matching napkins, and add a basket and other picnic essentials for a memorable handmade gift for a lucky couple.

The pattern instructions were accurate and easy to understand, so this quilt went together very quickly. There is no repeating block pattern, just different sized squares all cleverly pieced together with 1″ sashing strips (I used Kona Snow, a warm white). The finished size is about 62″ square. I’ve put together a bundle of ½ yard pieces from the Sanibel collection to make this quilt top as shown (pattern and 1 ½ yards fabric for sashing & borders not included.)

I love that pattern! The white space between the blocks lets each fabric shine!

This is a really neat pattern – looks great for showcasing large prints. I’ve been trying for a while to work out something to do with my stack of FQs of Laura Gunn’s Poppy line and that looks like something that could work. I’m curious though if an FQ is big enough for the biggest squares in the quilt? Hm.

What a great pattern for the large prints. Good job!
